On the Syntax of Correlative Es and Finite Clauses in German: an LFG Analysis
نویسندگان
چکیده
An analysis is proposed within the framework of LFG of sentences in German in which the correlative pronoun es occurs in conjunction with a CP. The pattern of occurrence of es in the middle eld, which diiers according to syntactic construction and type of the embedding verb, is derived from independently motivated LFG principles, in particular those concerning the mapping from a-structure to f-structure, together with the additional assumption that German has not only a thematic es, but also a subcategorized non-thematic es. The resulting empirical coverage is broader than that of previous approaches.

Reanalyzing German Correlative Es
Several Germanic languages use correlatives to mark subordination. German is considered to be a prime example of a language realizing correlative constructions to embed finite argument clauses. This paper discusses complex clausal constructions in German that can be identified by a so-called correlative nominal element es (‘it’) and a right-peripheral full clausal argument that is linked to es....

1 The authors are listed in alphabetical order. Abstract We present an analysis of nite argument clauses in German with the goal of clarifying the conditions that control the presence/absence of an additional correlative es in the Mittelfeld. The syntactic analysis relies on the assumption that both the clause and the pronominal es contribute to the same argument slot of the matrix verb, unifyi...

متن کاملCase Matching in Bavarian Relative Clauses: A declarative, non-derivational Account
Matching effects in German VP coordination and German free relatives, as in (1) and (2), have been discussed for quite some time, going back at least to Groos and van Riemsdijk (1981), as interesting phenomena for linguistic theorizing. More specifically, Ingria (1990) was the first to identify them as potential challenges to constraint-based and unificationbased approaches to syntax such as HP...
متن کاملThe Syntax and Semantics of Tensed Nominals
Sadler and Nordlinger (2001) provides a descriptive overview of the phenomenon of independent nominal tense, whereby tense marking on a nominal temporally situates the nominal itself, independent of the tense of the proposition. In this paper we build on this descriptive work by exploring the lines along which an lfg analysis might be developed of the syntax and semantics of different types of ...
